Here you will find answers to the most common questions about boats, parking, booking and staying at Kastellet. Our aim is to make it easy to plan your entire visit – from the journey here to excursions in Vaxholm, Stockholm and the archipelago.

Getting to Kastellet

Getting to Kastellet is easy. Waxholmsbolaget's regular passenger boats take you from Vaxholm to the island in just a few minutes.
How do I get to Kastellet?

Kastellet is located on its own island just outside Vaxholm. From Vaxholm, take one of Waxholmsbolaget's regular passenger boats to Kastellet.

Where do the boats to Kastellet depart from?

Waxholmsbolaget's boats depart from piers 1–10 in Vaxholm. The correct pier may vary between departures.

The SL app shows both the departure time and the pier used for your particular boat.

How long is the boat ride to Kastellet?

The journey between Vaxholm and Kastellet takes only a few minutes. The short boat ride is also the beginning of the experience of staying on a historic island in the archipelago.

Are SL tickets valid on Waxholmsbolaget's boats?

Yes. Regular SL single tickets and SL travelcards are valid on Waxholmsbolaget's regular boats to and from Kastellet.

The same tickets can also be used on Stockholm's buses, metro, commuter trains and other local public transport, making it easy to combine your stay with trips to Stockholm and other parts of the archipelago.

Can I use a regular SL single ticket?

Yes. A regular SL single ticket is valid on Waxholmsbolaget's regular boats to and from Kastellet.

Which ticket should I choose if I am staying for several days?

Choose the ticket that best matches the length of your stay and how much you plan to travel. SL offers travelcards valid for 24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days and longer periods.

SL travelcards are valid both on Waxholmsbolaget's regular boats and throughout Stockholm's local public transport network.

Do I need to book the boat in advance?

No. Waxholmsbolaget's regular boats to Kastellet do not normally need to be booked in advance. Check the current departure and pier in the SL app and make sure you have a valid ticket.

How late do the boats run?

Boats serve Kastellet from morning until evening, but departure times vary depending on the season and day of the week.

Always check the current timetable in the SL app or on our page about boats to Kastellet .

Where can I park my car?

Cars cannot be taken to Kastellet. We recommend the long-stay parking area near Vaxholm Church, which is within walking distance of the piers used by Waxholmsbolaget.

Another option is the parking area at Rindövägen 3. Parking is free of charge, and you can travel from Rindö to Vaxholm using the free car ferry operated by the Swedish Transport Administration.

Can I book a water taxi?

Yes. If you need to travel outside Waxholmsbolaget's regular timetable, you can book a water taxi. Water taxis are operated by independent companies and should preferably be booked in advance.

Booking

How do I book directly?

You can book directly through our online booking page , where you will find current prices and room availability.

Booking directly gives you access to our direct offers and personal service before, during and after your stay.

Is there a discount for longer stays?

Yes. When you book three nights or more directly through our website, you receive a 15% discount on your stay.

The discount is automatically included in the price shown when you search for a stay of three nights or longer. No discount code is required.

When is payment made?

When booking through our website, you can register a valid payment card as a booking guarantee or choose to pay immediately through our secure payment service.

If you choose the card guarantee option, your card is not charged when it is registered. It is used as a guarantee and charged in accordance with the booking conditions for the selected rate.

What is your cancellation policy?

The cancellation conditions depend on the rate and offer you choose. The applicable conditions are clearly displayed before you complete the booking and are also included in your booking confirmation.

If you booked through an external booking platform, the conditions of that booking platform apply.

Can I change my booking?

If you booked directly with us, your booking can be changed until the free-cancellation period has expired, provided that the requested change is possible and subject to availability.

Accommodation

Is breakfast included?

During the high season, breakfast is always included when you book accommodation at Kastellet. During the low season, breakfast is available for group bookings by prior arrangement.

Is lunch or dinner available at Kastellet?

Kastellet Bed & Breakfast provides accommodation and breakfast.

For lunch and dinner, we recommend Vaxholm town centre, which is only a few minutes away by Waxholmsbolaget boat. Vaxholm offers several restaurants, cafés and outdoor dining options.

Pre-booked groups can also arrange lunch, dinner and other meals through Strömma , which operates the restaurant and conference services at Kastellet. Please contact Strömma directly for bookings, menus and current information.

Do you offer dinner packages?

Yes. Our dinner packages combine accommodation and breakfast with a three-course dinner at Hamnkrogen in central Vaxholm.

The packages are suitable for couples, families and friends who would like to enjoy a relaxing evening without having to arrange dinner separately.

Can I buy snacks and drinks?

Yes. Next to the reception area, we have a self-service kiosk that is open 24 hours a day. It offers sweets, snacks and soft drinks.

Do all rooms have a private bathroom?

No. Showers and toilets are located in the corridor close to the guest rooms. Several bathrooms are available and shared between guests. When you use a bathroom, you have it entirely to yourself – just as you would at home.

Guests booking the Östra Linjen section have access to a private shower/WC and an additional separate WC for that group of rooms.

Is WiFi available?

Yes. Complimentary WiFi is included. Select the D-Link network – no password is required.

Is the accommodation accessible?

No. Kastellet Bed & Breakfast is located in a historic building with stairs, thresholds and no lift. The accommodation is therefore not accessible and may be difficult or unsuitable for guests with reduced mobility.

If accessibility is essential for your stay, we recommend choosing accommodation that is better adapted to your needs.

Do you have family rooms?

Yes. We have several triple rooms and spacious four-bed rooms where families and smaller groups can stay together.

Can we book several rooms together?

Yes. Families, friends and larger groups are welcome to book several rooms. Please contact us if you would like assistance with a larger booking or would prefer rooms located close to one another.

During your stay

How many nights do you recommend?

Kastellet is suitable for both a short overnight visit and a longer stay. Many guests use Kastellet as a peaceful base for exploring both the Stockholm Archipelago and Stockholm.

Staying for several nights gives you time to enjoy day trips, discover Vaxholm and return to Kastellet's historic surroundings in the evening.

What is there to do at Kastellet?

At Kastellet, you can explore the historic fortress environment, walk around the island and enjoy the atmosphere of the Stockholm Archipelago.

During the summer, the island is also home to a museum, galleries and a jewellery workshop. These businesses are not operated by Kastellet Bed & Breakfast, and their opening hours may vary. Please check current information directly with each business.

Can I visit Stockholm for the day?

Yes. Kastellet is a peaceful base for day trips to Stockholm. The SL tickets valid on Waxholmsbolaget's regular boats can also be used throughout Stockholm's local public transport network.

Can I take day trips in the Stockholm Archipelago?

Yes. With Kastellet as your base, you can make excursions to Vaxholm, Stockholm and other parts of the archipelago, depending on current timetables and boat connections.

Plan your journey in the SL app and consider choosing a ticket that matches the length of your stay.

Is Kastellet suitable for families?

Yes. Many children enjoy the boat ride, the fortress environment and the experience of staying at a real historic fort. Our triple and four-bed rooms allow families to stay together.

Please remember that Kastellet is a historic island environment. Children should be supervised, particularly outdoors and near the water.

Practical information

What time is check-in?

Check-in is available from 3:00 pm. Information about check-in, your access code and how to find your room will be sent to you before arrival.

What time is check-out?

Check-out is no later than 11:00 am unless otherwise agreed.

Can I check in late?

Yes. We offer self-service check-in, so you may arrive late in the evening. You do not need to inform us if you arrive later than planned.

All information needed for check-in will be sent before your arrival. Please make sure that your booking contains the correct email address and telephone number.

Is luggage storage available?

Luggage may be left beside the reception area before check-in or after check-out.

Please note that this area is not supervised and luggage is left at your own risk.

Are pets allowed?

No. Pets are not permitted at Kastellet Bed & Breakfast.
